Caryatid Reimagined

This garment was research into parametric design, three-dimensional (3D) printing, and dyeing of three-dimensional printed materials. The resulting pieces were integrated into a garment as an accessory. Dyeing allowed an investigation with the intensity of color dependent on varying lengths of time. The initial inspiration for the objects came from Anton Woll Soder’s animated video piece Reaction: An experimental particle animation. The columns were parametrically created using the Grasshopper Plugin for Rhino 3D. The 3D printed pieces were printed with polylactic acid (PLA), cleaned by hand then dyed for different specific times. By dying the columns different intensities, a variety of shades were achieved thus creating a gradation of color intensity when placed onto the garment. Pattern making was used to create the dress which has a simple silhouette with complimentary fabrics to achieve a minimalistic yet futuristic look. The white fabrics keep the garment’s focus on the dyed three-dimensional parts.
